RIP COACH SOMMER. YOU HAVE TOUCHED MANY & INSPIRED COUNTLESS LIVES, YOUNG & OLD
This Blog is usually directed towards Security Tips & Locksmith related content. But Not Today….
Today’s Blog is dedicated to a friend who has left us way too soon…. Coach Jeff Sommer…..
Coach Jeff Sommer, 58 was the athletic director of Estero High School who coached numerous runners to state championships. Saturday, May 2nd, He collapsed while holding his chest at the Class 3A Track and Field Championships in Jacksonville. As his girls captured the State title, Sommer was cheering and then went down and was lying on the ground propped up against a fence. Paramedics arrived in less than a minute. He was breathing when he was taken to the ambulance. He was revived on the trip to the hospital. But he never made it to doctor’s care. Coach Sommer suffered a major heart attack and died Saturday morning.
Coach Jeff Sommer is a legend! He has touched the lives of a countless number of individuals.
No coach in Lee County history of any sport has matched his eight state championships. He accumulated four for the boys and four for the girls cross country teams.
I have known Coach Sommer since my daughter was a Freshman & played Lacrosse. Kaitie is now almost 23. My oldest son, Michael is currently a Junior at Estero & is also an athlete.
Coach Sommer was Dedicated to not only the athletes that he coached, but to the athletes of the many sports programs of Estero high & also Dedicated to Coaching & Training runners from other schools in our community.
I knew Coach Sommer, but I feel like I have gotten to know him even more through the outpouring of news stories, postings on social media and interviews with the many people that were close to him, Looked up to him, respected him & Loved him dearly.
While reading the numerous stories & postings of people reflecting upon his life, it really got me thinking.
Coach Sommer was 58. From his outward appearance, he looked & seemed healthy. But apparently he must have had some issues with his heart. He did suffer & recover from a massive heart attack in his early 40’s. So, with that being said, it really got me thinking. I’m 46. I’m diabetic. I feel fine now, but I could do a much better job taking care of myself through a consistent fitness regiment & doing more to regulate my diet.
As I said earlier, my daughter Kaitie is our oldest at 22 years old. Mikey is 17. Matthew is 14. Samuel is our youngest child and he is 6.
Do I really want my kids to have a liklier chance of losing their father because he didn’t take care if himself? NO!
So Coach Sommer has inspired me, even after his tragic death. His death has caused me to tearfully reflect upon my life.
Every Year people make resolutions to better their lives. It’s usually called NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS.
I think, in remembrance of Coach Jeff Sommer, and out of Love and Respect for an amazing man that has left us too soon, we should ALL Reflect upon our own lives. We should consciously choose to make our own resolution to better ourselves. It could be a resolution regarding health, fitness, relationships, finances, grades, sports or anything else pertaining to reaching a personal goal.
WHAT IS YOUR SOMMER RESOLUTION?
